The challenge

What the client needed.

Vedrastores wanted to launch a multi-vendor marketplace in Kenya: independent sellers list and manage their own stock, buyers order on the web or a phone, riders deliver, and the business collects payment through M-Pesa — the way most Kenyans pay. They didn't need a storefront. They needed the entire operating system for a marketplace, delivered by one accountable person, fast.

My role

Sole developer — architecture, backend, web, mobile and deployment

The approach

How I built it.

  1. 01

Designed one shared backend and data model so every platform — buyer, vendor, rider and admin — sees the same order in real time.

  2. 02

Built the buyer portal and marketing site in Next.js for speed and search visibility, with the M-Pesa (Safaricom Daraja) checkout flow end-to-end.

  3. 03

Gave vendors their own dashboard for products, live inventory, orders and payout tracking, so the marketplace scales without the admin team doing data entry.

  4. 04

Shipped the buyer and rider apps from a single React Native/Expo codebase, with real-time order status from checkout to doorstep.

  5. 05

Used Firebase for real-time data and AWS S3 with CloudFront for fast image delivery across the region.

Key engineering decisions

The hard problems, and how I solved them.

The decisions that made the difference — each one a trade-off chosen on purpose.

  1. 01

    Paying the way Kenya pays

    Problem
Most buyers pay with M-Pesa, not cards — a checkout without it would lose most of the market.
    Decision
Integrated Safaricom's Daraja API end-to-end: STK push to the buyer's phone, callback confirmation and order updates.
    Outcome
Mobile-money payments run live in production across web and app.
  2. 02

    One order, four viewpoints

    Problem
Buyers, vendors, riders and admins all touch the same order and must never disagree about its state.
    Decision
A single shared backend and real-time data layer that every surface reads from.
    Outcome
Status changes made anywhere appear everywhere — from checkout to doorstep.
